例:IBM System/360、DEC PDP-8。
Apple Macintosh(1984)是首批商业成功的 GUI PC。

3. Computer Hardware|
Illustration
What are CPU, GPU, TPU, & NPU?
Illustration
What are direct vs. indirect input devices?
Input Devices|
What are Inkjet vs. laser printers?
Illustration
Notes
Output Devices|
  • Video:monitor、data projector、VR display、flexible display;resolution 以 pixels 衡量。
  • Sound:audio speakers、headphones、headsets、smart speakers。
  • Print:inkjet printer、laser printer、plotter、3D printer。
4. Computer Data|Bits, Bytes, and Beyond
Illustration
  • Storage vs. Communication Units:storage capacity 使用 Bytes(如 500 GB SSD);network / internet speed 使用 bits per second(如 1 Gbps)。
5. Inside the Computer|Processing Hardware
Motherboard
Motherboard: main circuit board
Motherboard: main circuit board
  • Buses / Data Channels:
  • Ports & Connectors:USB、HDMI、Ethernet、audio
Microprocessor(CPU)
CPU(Central Processing Unit)
    Illustration

Primary Storage — RAM vs. ROM
Illustration
  • 在电脑启动时, ROM 负责提供最基础的代码(像 BIOS)来唤醒硬件;
RAM — Random Access MemoryROM — Read Only Memory
BIOS / UEFI firmware
6. Secondary Storage|
Illustration
  • Category 1 — Magnetic Disk Drives(HDD)
  • Category 2 — Optical Disks
    • CD:CD-ROM、CD-R、CD-RW;约 700 MB;red laser。
  • Category 3 — Flash Memory
  • Category 4 — Cloud Storage
    • 例:iCloud、Dropbox、Google Drive、OneDrive。
7. Networking Computers|
Illustration
LAN — Local Area NetworkWAN — Wide Area Network
范围小:home、office、building、campus范围大:countries、continents、global
共享 data、printers、peripherals提供 internet、email、web browsing
Wired Ethernet / wireless Wi‑FiCables、undersea fibre、cellular、satellite
通常 privately owned;high speed、low latency可跨多个 owners,如 ISPs、telecom providers
Client-Server Networks
Illustration
Cloud-Based Networks
  • 例:Microsoft 365、Google Workspace、Amazon Web Services(AWS)。
8. Computer Software|
Illustration
Layer 1 — Firmware
  • 现代系统使用 UEFI(Unified Extensible Firmware Interface) 作为更新版 BIOS replacement。
  • Firmware vs. Driver
Layer 2 — Operating System(OS)
  • User Interface(UI):如 Windows desktop、macOS Finder。
  • Desktop OS:Windows 11、macOS Sonoma、Linux(open source)。
  • Mobile OS:iOS、Android。
  • Compatibility Chain:Hardware → OS → Application。
Windows OS Boot-Up Sequence
  1. Power On:Firmware(BIOS / UEFI)启动并检查 hardware。
  2. Load OS to RAM:Firmware 从 storage 读取 OS 并载入 RAM。
  3. OS Takes Control:OS 初始化 drivers 与 core services。
  4. System Ready:OS 开始管理 CPU、memory、devices,desktop 出现。
Layer 3 — Application Software
9. Software Ownership and Licensing|
Proprietary Software(Closed Source)Open-Source Software
例:Microsoft Office 365、Adobe Creative Cloud、Windows 11例:LibreOffice、Linux、VLC、Firefox
收入:licence fees / subscriptions收入:support、services、enterprise versions
10. Acquiring and Classifying Application Software
Three Ways to Acquire Application Software
  • Buy Off-the-Shelf:
Three Types of Application Software
例:Microsoft 365 / Google Workspace、QuickBooks、Salesforce CRM、graphics software、web browser。
例:Canada Revenue Agency tax software、military / aerospace systems、proprietary corporate systems。
  • Software Type vs. Software Source
    • Horizontal → 通常 off-the-shelf。
    • Vertical → off-the-shelf 或 off-the-shelf with alterations。
    • One-of-a-kind → custom-developed。
Gen AI & This Topic|补充内容(Exam A 不考)
